We’ve been sold a lie.
We’ve been told that food is just “personal preference” — a matter of taste, tradition, or convenience. But the truth is, what’s on your plate has never been just about flavor. It’s about access. It’s about equity. It’s about survival.
And for too many women — especially women of color — the very systems meant to nourish us are stacked against us.
🍔 The Politics of What We Eat
Food deserts aren’t accidents. The lack of fresh produce in certain neighborhoods isn’t an oversight. The dollar menu that seems like the only option when you’re working two jobs? That’s by design.
Marketing dollars push processed foods into our homes while keeping fresh, whole foods out of reach. It’s not just about cost — it’s about conditioning. We’ve been trained to crave quick fixes and call it a meal.
But here’s the hard truth: every bite is a vote. You are either feeding your body the fuel it needs to thrive or giving systems permission to keep feeding you what will make you sick.
🌱 Food as Resistance
Reclaiming your nutrition is one of the most powerful acts of resistance you can make. Because when you take control of your plate, you take control of your health, your energy, and your future.
You’re not just eating. You’re disrupting.
You’re breaking generational patterns that say “this is how we’ve always cooked.” You’re challenging corporate giants that profit from our illnesses. You’re telling the next generation: We deserve better — and we’re worth the work it takes to get it.
🛒 Practical Ways to Reclaim Your Plate
1. Shop Smart in Any Store
Even in stores with limited fresh produce, choose frozen vegetables and fruits — they’re often more affordable and still packed with nutrients.
2. Flip the Label
If sugar, salt, or ingredients you can’t pronounce are in the top three, put it back.
3. Add Before You Subtract
Instead of obsessing over cutting things out, focus on adding whole, nutrient-rich foods to your plate. Over time, the better will crowd out the harmful.
4. Make Water Your Default
Sugary drinks are silent saboteurs. Start swapping one a day for water and watch your energy shift.
5. Cook One More Meal at Home Each Week
Control your ingredients. Control your portions. Control your future.
🍽 Your Plate, Your Power
Food is deeply personal. It’s tied to memory, culture, and comfort. But it’s also tied to disease, disparity, and — if we’re not careful — early death.
When we reclaim our plates, we’re not just fighting for better health. We’re fighting for our right to live long enough to enjoy the life we’re building.
Because your health is political. And your plate is a protest.
